THE STORY
Self-Taught Since 2004
KGTHETECH is a 40-year-old self-taught cybersecurity specialist and hardware maker from New York, now based in Aurora, Colorado. Working with networks and systems since 2004 — back when the proper terms weren't even known. TCP/IP learned 20+ years ago by clicking around, breaking things, fixing them, and figuring it out.
KGTHETECH was founded as a one-man operation focused on IT services, cybersecurity tools, graphic design, and commercial photography. Over the years: PC Tech at Insight Global/Deutsche Bank, stints at Home Depot and Top Shelf Electric, investor relations at DF King/Fidelity. Attended City Tech CUNY studying architecture, graduated from High School of Art & Design in New York.
Life Has Been a Roller Coaster
The last 34 years have been rough. Homelessness, financial struggles, anger, and gaps in life that most people can't imagine. Been broke, frustrated, and at times completely defeated.
In 2022, a car accident caused a severe back injury. In 2023, the injury was re-aggravated in Oklahoma. Then, while working at King Soopers in Colorado, another back injury caused temporary paralysis — with zero compensation. Chronic back pain is a daily reality to this day.
To make income, plasma donations fill the gap — a process that takes a physical toll but provides just enough to survive. The Amazon Vine program helped source parts for builds, though that's no longer active. Parts now come from AliExpress and wherever deals can be found.
Building for Mental Health
Building cybersecurity tools, ethical hacking devices, cyberdecks, antennas, and electronics isn't just a hobby or a side hustle — it's therapy. It's proof that even when the world is crashing down, something functional, valuable, and real can still be created.
Cantennas built from soup cans and car exhaust pipes. ESP32 signal survey kits. Cyberdecks running Raspberry Pi, Kali Linux, SDR-RTL, and wireless adapters. Even a complete FPV drone — though the goggles to fly it still aren't affordable yet.
All of it documented on TikTok at @KGTheTech — raw process, no hand-holding, no fancy editing. Just the journey.
From New York, Grew Up in Poverty
From New York. Grew up in poverty. Black. Representing hip-hop culture and the streets. This isn't a curated brand identity — this is real. "Hacking on a Budget" is literal: no 3D printer, so materials get made from ABS plastic by hand. No professional photography budget, but trained as a commercial photographer — so it gets done.
Building from nothing, creating something, and making it work — no matter what.
The Goal: Professional Cybersecurity
Working toward CompTIA Network+, Security+, and CySA+ certifications. Active on TryHackMe, constantly practicing. A portfolio of real-world skills built through doing — signal analysis, RF development, network security, and hardware hacking.
Every dollar from product sales, subscriptions, and donations goes directly toward: parts, certifications, equipment, and survival.
The Message
You don't need money to be great. You don't need perfect circumstances. You don't need to come from privilege. You need hustle, skill, and the refusal to quit. That's hacking on a budget. That's the culture. That's KGTHETECH.
TIMELINE
- 2004 — Started self-teaching networking, Linux, and systems administration. NYC roots.

- 2009 — Built first cantenna from a coffee can. Started Wi-Fi range experiments.
- 2022 — Car accident causes severe back injury.

Custom-built portable hacking station — car head unit stereo housing, Raspberry Pi 4 + Pi 5, NVMe HAT, Kali Linux, SDR-RTL, wireless adapter with monitor mode + injection, DIY Wi-Fi Pineapple integration, and dual-button power system. Currently working on custom ABS plastic lid.
ESP32 Wi-Fi Signal Survey Kit
Open-hardware development kit for RF/IoT hobbyists and educators. ESP32 board, GPS antenna, Wi-Fi antennas, MicroSD logging, quickstart guide. Built for lab-based signal strength experiments and authorized testing.
Cantenna Collection
From 2009 coffee can designs to current car exhaust pipe builds. 2.4 GHz directional antennas. 14dBi gain, 22° beam, 300m range. Handbuilt, tuned to exact 1/4 wavelength specs.
FPV Drone (Complete)
Fully assembled FPV racing drone. Complete build, ready to fly — but the goggles aren't affordable yet. This represents both the skill and the struggle: capable of building professional-grade equipment, held back by finances.
